Many of you may have seen or heard of the Bellus 3D Dental Pro app, but aren’t exactly sure why it would benefit you. In this blog, I’ll explain what it is and how this true state-of-the-art technology will definitely benefit you, whether you’re a lab owner or a dentist.

The Bellus 3D Dental Pro is an easy-to-use app that allows a dentist to capture a 3D facial scan of a patient, then have the lab import files into 3Shape (or other) scanner design software and use it as an integral part of diagnostic, surgical, and restorative smile design planning. This is helpful to accelerate high-value case acceptance by the patient and clinician approval.

It significantly improves doctor-patient communication and doctor-lab communication because the technician virtually has the 3-dimensional patient’s face/head in front of them (instead of a static photo) while they are designing the case. The improved communication reduces case remakes by increasing proficiency and accuracy, improving patient case acceptance, and setting a lab apart from their competition by offering something highly advanced.

Unlike many other 3D imaging systems for the dental world that cost anywhere from $5,000-$25,000, Bellus 3D Dental Pro app costs only $480 annually, and utilizes the facial recognition technology on the newer Apple iPhone and iPad systems (iPad Pro and iPhone 11 and up). The Apple facial recognition camera uses infrared technology for the app to capture a series of both 2D and 3D images of the patient’s face, and then places those images into the Bellus 3D software, which in turn creates a very realistic 3D image of the patient’s face, head, and neck.

Another advantage to a lab receiving this 3D image is that it provides a platform for the lab to see anatomical cants that usually they would not normally see. It also enables the technician to place the patient’s face into a digital facebow so they can adjust the aesthetic and functional planes. This alone can pay for the annual subscription itself, by significantly reducing (if not eliminating) case remakes.

Bellus 3D partnered with 3Shape before the Chicago meeting this past February, so the ease to connect with 3Shape is even easier than before. It is also compatible with all other systems, but 3Shape is just directly linked to the app for 3Shape users.
