When Roland DGSHAPE USA launched the DWX-52D, replacing the DWX-51D in January of 2018, they did away with the C-Clamp and went with a new Snap-In Clamp System for disc changing which includes six material adapters. The idea was that the new style would offer a fast and secure set-up eliminating mounting errors and minimizing damage during disc insertion. The Snap-In Clamp System, reinserted material adapters keep discs indexed to their original position for production that requires secondary milling or two-stage processing.

I have had this task of writing a blog by the end of 2020 and – despite usually being fairly creative – I had major writer’s block trying to write about something that matters. Here we are, at the beginning of 2021 and I woke up out of a dead sleep singing Olivia Newton-John’s “Physical” in my head. Then suddenly the lyrics shifted from “Let’s get physical… physical – I wanna get physical… let’s get into physical…” into “Let’s get digital… digital – I wanna get digital… let’s get into digital!”
The decades old method of capturing a patient’s tooth morphology and related oral structures has involved taking a physical impression of some form and pouring that impression with some form of gypsum or resin product. Depending on the contraction rate of the impression material, one can determine what expansion rate the gypsum should roughly be to compensate for the shrinkage of the impression material. It is sort of a tug of war with the ultimate goal of producing a dental model as close to the dental structure in size and shape as possible.
