Most of us know that the use of a hand sanitizer is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of germs through cross contamination. However, are the following statements Fact or Fiction?

- Fact or Fiction: Thorough hand washing should take 60 seconds. 

- Fact or Fiction: Alcohol is a drying agent and it tends to pull water away from organisms. This is what harms them. 

- Fact or Fiction: On average, 21,000 germs per square inch await you at your desk.

According to the [womenshealthmag.com](http://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/office-germs), the answers to the above questions are: (1) Fiction, 45 seconds, (2) Fact, (3) Fact.

Protect yourself in the dental office by wiping down your space daily with a disinfectant wipe. The cost is about 10 cents per sheet and well worth the protection it gives. As for hand sanitizers, be sure to use one with a minimum of 60% alcohol content throughout the day.
