3D printing of models has been available for the larger dental laboratory for a few years, but 3D printing has finally become available for the small dental laboratory. The very small and very affordable 3D Systems ProJet 1200 prints burnout patterns for pressed ceramics or casting alloys and is ideal not only for small labs, but for labs of every size.
The learning curve is short and easy, but there are a few things that the operator should know before starting their first print job.
- Always wear nitrile gloves when handling parts inside the ProJet 1200 to prevent material from contacting skin.
- It is very important that the cartridge be seated correctly in the pocket or else a leak can be created in the cartridge which may damage the system.
- Take care not to spill any of the print material. If a leak/spill occurs do not run the printer. Clean residue off glass using alcohol. UV curing will harden it on the glass and that will make it very hard to remove.
- When installing the bulb used for light-curing, do not touch the bulb with your bare hands. Use a paper towel to handle it.
- Download and install the Geomagic software using only Windows OS 7 or 8.
- When shipping the ProJet 1200, the cartridge should be removed and placed in a zip lock bag. Place the plastic shipping tray in place of cartridge and clamp lever down.
- You’ll need a steady supply of isopropyl alcohol (minimum 94% purity) to remove the sticky surface of the resin units you print.
- Investing resin materials is not the same as investing wax. Unlike wax, resins don’t gradually melt. You’ll need a high strength phosphate investment. We recommend Formula 1 because it is strong, offers a rapid burnout, easy pouring and investing, a wide expansion range, produces smooth surface qualities. As a universal investment, it’s ideal for pressed ceramics as well as casting alloy.
- Connect your ProJet 1200 printer using either an Ethernet cable for a network or a USB cable if connecting directly to a computer.
- Retain the shipping carton/packing materials after setting up ProJet 1200 just in case it ever becomes necessary to ship the unit.
